Granular Corneal Dystrophy Type 2

These days, I felt extreme eye strain. Yesterday, I found my eyes bloodshot. That's why I went to the optometrist yesterday. He prescribed anti-inflammatory agent and artificial tears to me. What I got also was a diagnosis named Granular corneal dystrophy Type 2 which is also known as Avellino corneal dystrophy.

The point is that "Granular corneal dystrophy (GCD) is a rare, inherited condition characterized by granular deposits in the stromal layer of the cornea, leading to slow progression of visual impairment due to loss of corneal transparency." 

 

Signs and Symptoms

Patients are most often asymptomatic but may experience glare and reduced vision. Patients may form corneal erosions, which can cause decreased visual acuity and result in corneal clouding later in life. Other symptoms in addition to visual impairment include eye discomfort or pain.  

 

WHAT I NEED TO DO

is to avoid  any eye wound, ultraviolet rays, and surgery like LASIK or LASEK. It was rather lucky for me that I felt extreme eye strain these days. I finally got to optometrist for the first time since I became an adult. I just hope that my girlfriend does not have this gene defect that our children afterward will not get hurt by GCD Type I.
